<text>The Travelling Community in Cork City has long been a resilient force advocating for the rights and recognition of Irish Travellers. Known for their rich cultural heritage, they have faced marginalisation and discrimination, yet continue to fight for equality and the preservation of their traditions.

Activism in Cork has included public demonstrations, workshops, and efforts to secure more culturally appropriate, permanent housing for Travellers. Activists have also played a key role in national discussions on Traveller rights, striving to combat racism, challenge discrimination, and ensure that Travellers' voices are heard and valued.

A key victory came in 2017 when the Irish government officially recognised Irish Travellers as an ethnic minority, a result of years of campaigning by groups such as the Cork Traveller Women's Network and the Traveller Visibility Group. These organisations have been crucial in pushing for better access to education, healthcare, housing, and employment, and have consistently called for the protection of Traveller rights as an indigenous group.

A significant setback for the Travelling Community was the Anti-Trespass Act of 2002, which criminalised occupying land without permission, severely limiting Travellers’ ability to continue their nomadic lifestyles. This law led to widespread protests, with groups like the Traveller Visibility Group advocating for its reform to protect Traveller cultural practices while ensuring secure accommodation.

Travellers traditionally used these colourful, ornate wagons as homes, offering both a means of transportation and shelter as they moved from place to place. In the Irish Traveller context, barrel-top wagons were often pulled by horses and were distinctive for their rounded roofs, which resembled the shape of a barrel.

These wagons were often highly decorated, with intricate carvings, paintings, and vibrant colours, reflecting the creative and artistic expression of the communities that built and lived in them. They were typically made of wood, and the interiors were designed to be compact yet functional, with space for sleeping, cooking, and storing essential items.

For many Travellers, it remains a symbol of their ancestral way of life and resilience in the face of societal changes. While the wagons are no longer as commonly used for daily living, they continue to hold a place of pride and represent the close-knit, family-oriented nature of Traveller communities.
</text>

</text>

                  <text>The Cahirmee Horse Fair is an annual event held in Cahir, County Tipperary, Ireland. It is one of the oldest and most significant horse fairs in Ireland, with a history dating back over 300 years. The fair typically takes place in early July and is a major event for the Travelling Community, where horses are sold, traded, and admired.

Beyond the horse-trading, the fair is a vibrant celebration of Traveller culture, with music, traditional dress, and a gathering of families from across Ireland and beyond. It's not just about the horses; it also serves as a social occasion where people meet, reconnect, and celebrate their heritage.

In addition to horses, the fair often includes stalls selling a variety of goods, food, and crafts, making it a colourful and lively event for locals and visitors alike. The Cahirmee Horse Fair is an important cultural event, not only for the Traveller community but for the wider public, highlighting the rich traditions and history of horse trading in Ireland.</text>

                  <text>
This collection consists of a series of historical photographs documenting the lives of Irish Travellers, originally published by the Irish Examiner. These images provide a unique and intimate glimpse into the culture, lifestyle, and challenges faced by Irish Travellers, a traditionally nomadic ethnic group in Ireland. Captured across several decades, the photographs highlight a variety of subjects, including family life, life on the road, evictions, and interactions with broader Irish society.

The collection, generously made available by the Irish Examiner, offers a significant visual record of the Traveller community, showing both the resilience and the changing dynamics of a group whose way of life has often been marginalised or misunderstood.

Access and Use:

This collection has been digitised and is now available for online access. It has been made accessible with the kind permission of the Irish Examiner. The images are provided for educational, research, and non-commercial use, and users are encouraged to explore the collection to gain insights into the culture and history of Irish Travellers.

                  <text>
